Dieses Tool auf Deutsch: Wie reich bin ich?

This tool places your net worth inside the actual wealth distribution of German households, based on the Bundesbank's current PHF wealth survey (2023 wave). Enter one number and see how many households own less than you. Useful for anyone living in Germany, and especially revealing for expats comparing against a new home country. No sign-up, method fully disclosed.

Your net worth in euros (assets minus debts)
What counts, what does not?

Counted: real estate, savings, brokerage accounts, business assets, private pension and life insurance, minus all loans and debts. Not counted: household goods and public or occupational pension entitlements. This mirrors the Bundesbank's definition.

The distribution almost nobody knows

Half of all households in Germany own less than 103,200 euros net. The average is still 324,800 euros, more than three times as much. That spread exists because a small number of very large fortunes pull the mean upward. Comparing yourself with the average means, in practice, comparing yourself with the top few percent.

How the ranking works

The basis is the Bundesbank's household survey "Private Haushalte und ihre Finanzen" (PHF), 2023 wave, published in April 2025. The Bundesbank reports net wealth at eleven percentile points, from the 5th (minus 800 euros) to the 95th (1,227,900 euros). Your value is placed between those points by linear interpolation. Above the 95th percentile we stop estimating, because the sample does not support finer claims there.

Three quirks of the data are worth knowing. First, the survey counts households, not people; a couple with 200,000 euros in joint assets is one household. Second, entitlements from the public pension system are excluded, and in Germany those are a large share of real retirement wealth. Third, the numbers are from 2023; the next wave arrives in 2026.

Two examples

Priya, 31, moved to Berlin four years ago. She rents, has 22,000 euros invested and a 2,000 euro loan left: net worth 20,000 euros, around the 30th percentile. For someone who started from zero in a new country, being ahead of three in ten households is not a bad fourth year.

The Bergers, early 50s, paid-off row house (380,000 euros) plus 70,000 euros saved. Net worth 450,000 euros, the 78th percentile. The top fifth starts at 473,500 euros, so they are just short of it, even though their checking account never felt like any of this. In Germany that is what the path usually looks like: property, paid off slowly.

What the number means, and what it does not

The percentile describes your position, not your worth as a person and not your future. A low number at 25 is normal; wealth in Germany correlates strongly with age and inheritance. The value of the number is orientation: it replaces feelings with data, and it shows why the often quoted average is a poor benchmark.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average net worth in Germany?

The household mean is 324,800 euros, the median 103,200 euros (PHF 2023). The median is the more honest figure: it marks the exact middle, while the mean is pulled up by a small number of very large fortunes.

What net worth puts you in the top 10 percent in Germany?

779,500 euros per household in 2023. The top 5 percent starts at 1,227,900 euros.

Does my home count toward net worth?

Yes, at market value minus the remaining mortgage. A 400,000 euro house with 250,000 euros left on the loan adds 150,000 euros. This is why many households jump visibly in the distribution the month the mortgage ends.

Why compare households instead of individuals?

Because that is how the Bundesbank surveys: assets like homes or joint accounts rarely split cleanly inside a household. The comparison runs slightly strict for singles and slightly generous for couples.

How does German wealth compare with the US?

Median household net worth in the US was about 193,000 dollars in the Fed's 2022 SCF survey, about 1.7 times the German median once converted at the exchange rates of the time. The gap says less about thrift than about homeownership rates and how pensions are counted: public pension claims, large in Germany, appear in neither survey.

How current is the data?

It comes from the 2023 survey, published in April 2025, the newest of its kind. The Bundesbank collects the next wave in 2026; when it appears we update the tool and note it in the changelog.
